Bedford County Historical Society names 'Historian of the Year'

The Bedford County Historical Society is preparing to bestow its annual “Historian of the Year Award” to Kevin Mearkle at its upcoming award banquet.

He spent the last four years working on a book titled “Civil War Soldiers of Bedford County.”

The work compiles more than 4,200 Civil War veterans that lived in the county.

Mearkle says that it’s an honor to receive the award and be part of the preservation of these stories.

The book is available through the Bedford County Historical Society, and the proceeds go to support it. The awards banquet will be held on Saturday, April 23, at 6 p.m. at the Historical Society located at 6441 Lincoln Highway in Bedford.

Tickets are $30 each and they can be purchased at the society’s office or by calling 814-623-2011.

The evening will also have special significance for another area historian.

William Mock, who will serve as the evening’s “Master of Ceremonies,” will be hosting a raffle for some commemorative items of milestone anniversaries of the Civil War to raise money for a scholarship in honor of his late wife.

That scholarship will benefit graduating high school seniors in Bedford County.

Raffle chances cost $10 each.

There is no limit to how many can be purchased, and they will be sold throughout the evening at the banquet.

The scholarship has eligibility criteria to be met.

For more information on that, please contact the Bedford County Historical Society or the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies.
